The Eastern Coast of Sri Lanka was always the colonial treasure-trove in the Island. A favourite even among the ancient invaders of the country who came to call Sri Lanka home, the East Coast of the island was famed for it’s pristine beaches and sunny climate. In addition to providing an architectural spectacle, the structures built by them provided all the protection this area needed. The Dutch Fort in Trincomalee stands proof to this; made up of dark enormously thick walls, this Fort along with its Ramparts stand tall even today. The story of the Dutch Fort goes back to the 16th century. The Portuguese were the first to build this structure in the year 1614 on the ruins of the world famous ancient Hindu Koneswaram temple, but much of their structure got damaged over the years. When the Dutch arrived next, they renovated and rebuilt the fort- naming it Fort Fredrick- giving rise to the structure that presently exists today. Weathering the storms of time the Fort stands strong emulating each day the power of the Dutch regime.
