The Maldives isn’t just about lying by the water; it’s about getting into it. Once you’re out on the lagoon or past the reef, the trip starts to feel a little different. You don’t need to be an expert at any of this either. Most resorts will get you set up no matter your skill level, and half the fun is just trying something new.
Kayaking
Grab a kayak in the early morning, and you’ll have the lagoon almost to yourself. The water is usually flat and clear enough to see straight down to the sand. It’s an easy way to explore the coastline at your own pace, no lessons needed.
Surfing
If travellers know where to look, the Maldives has some great waves. Several atolls are known for their surf breaks, and boat trips out to the reef passes are common. Beginners can usually find gentler spots closer to shore, so surfing is not just for experienced riders. It is one of the best water activities in Maldives, and resorts like Kuda Villingili are known for offering excellent access to surf spots.
Jet Skiing
For something faster, jet skiing gets your heart rate up in a hurry. You’ll speed across open water with spray flying everywhere, and it’s over faster than you’d like. Most resorts offer short sessions, so it’s an easy add-on to your day, even if you’ve only got an hour free.

Snorkelling
You barely have to try hard for this one. Slip on a mask right off the beach, and you’re already looking at coral and fish within a few metres. Some spots have turtles or reef sharks nearby, too, and you don’t need a boat trip to see something worth remembering. Even a quick swim before breakfast can turn up something good.
