The word ‘bondi’ is a word which has the meaning ‘water breaking over rocks’ or ‘noise of water breaking over rocks’ and is of aboriginal origin. The main beach area stretches over a kilometre and is popular with hundred of visitors both local and foreign all the year around. Near the area surrounding the beach dolphins and whales swim freely and can be sighted from time to time. In 1907 the Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club was founded and is known to be one of the oldest lifesaving clubs in the world. Like any beach there are numerous sports and recreational activities that take place on the beach. Such activities include a marathon which is held usually every year where Bondi Beach marks the end point of the race. The race circuit stretches from Bondi Beach to the CBD of the city. Other activities are sculpture competitions on the beach and film festivals. In addition to these activities Bondi Beach market is also a fun place to walk around and check out some local fare.
