When it comes to east coast beaches in Sri Lanka, two of the best can be found at Passikudah and Kalkudah; here is a quick guide on what to expect at these slices of paradise.

Planning Your Visit
You can look to visit both these places since Kalkudah is next to Pasikuda; beach hotels can be found here too so accommodation is not a problem. For transport, you can take a nine-hour train journey from Colombo (to Valaichchena Railway Station) or drive there in around seven hours.
Passikudah Beach
Soft white sands, calm waters that are shallow and plenty of space for family fun or romantic walks on the shore is what you will find here. Properties right along the beach such as Amethyst Resort Passikudah offer water sports too be it snorkelling, water-skiing, banana boat and jet scooter rides, windsurfing or deep-sea fishing.
Kalkudah Beach
Nearby is Kalkudah Beach where you will find a similar backdrop though with relatively fewer people. Not visited at much like the one in Passikudah, this palm-fringed beach is another lovely stretch of sand for sunbathing or a dip in the sea. You may be able to see local fishermen with their boats here as well.
Diving Adventures
Those looking for more excitement can go diving in Passikudah which offers unforgettable underwater experiences. Certain resorts offer the needed training and certification for diving, giving you the chance to not only visit colourful reefs but intriguing shipwrecks too such as the British Sergeant, a World War Two tanker.
