The Negombo Lagoon covers an extent of 3,164 hectares and is considered to be a segment of the extensive Muthurajawela Marsh coastal wetland. The Muthurajawela Marsh is a noteworthy wetland habitat which is recognized as a luxuriant ecosystem. Having the distinction of being Sri Lanka’s largest marsh, this area is very popular with nature enthusiasts as it presents an extensive inter-related natural environment. The shores of the Negombo Lagoon are occupied by the local fishermen who carry out their daily activities as they have done for generations.
