The island nation Sri Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean and is abundantly blessed by Mother Nature. The blue waters surrounding the island are home to a large variety of marine life. Some of the rare and endangered animal species can also be found in and around Sri Lanka. One such marine creature is the sea turtle. One of the places in the Southern part of Sri Lanka where Sea Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs is Rekawa. Five of the seven world’s marine turtles come here for nesting and they are either endangered or critically endangered. Therefore, the need to protect these valuable eggs is of extreme importance. The first Turtle Conservation Project of it’s kind was also launched here. The project aims to provide a safe hatching environment for these endangered creatures. The centre encourages local fishermen and villagers to bring eggs found on the beach to the hatchery in return for a sum of money. They also keep the disabled turtles in-house as they would not be able to survive in the wild.
Apart from the turtle conservation activities, there is a lot going on in the Southern part of Sri Lanka. Galle is one of the up and coming towns in the Southern region. Among the many things to do in Galle Sri Lanka a visit to the historic Galle fort is a must. Visit the various landmarks within the fort such as the maritime museum, the cricket stadium and etc.. There are quite a few places to stay in Galle, however, if you opt for a change of scene a quieter option would be, Tangalle. Among places to stay in this coastal town, the newest exciting addition is Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort. Tucked away in a lush coconut plantation with the waves breaking at the bottom of the cliff, the resort offers timeless luxury.
