Sentosa Island is a famous Singaporean island resort that was opened in 1974. The word ‘sentosa’ is Malay and translates to mean peace or tranquillity. It has come a long way since it was known by its other name, Pulau Blakang Mati, which means ‘island of death’ since it was used as a pirate hideout! Billing itself as ‘Asia’s Favourite Playground’, the island is visited by over 5 million people every year. Sentosa Island contains numerous attractions including two golf courses and a sheltered beach, Fort Siloso, which stretches for over two kilometres.
While Sentosa Island is relatively small in size, it contains a plethora of tourist attractions and activities. One of the biggest attractions here is Underwater World Singapore and Dolphin Lagoon. Visitors will not only get the opportunity to feed tame rays and sharks but they will also be able to swim with dolphins and even sharks! The park is sure to be fun for the entire family. Universal Studios Singapore is another activity for young and old alike. The theme park has 24 rides based on famous films. Rides to look out for are the Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure and the Revenge of the Mummy. Visitors will also be able to enjoy a 4D movie.
To reach the island, one can take the MRT and get off at the HarbourFront Station. From there one can walk across the Sentosa Boardwalk. The canopied bridge is lined by lush greenery, and visitors will arrive on the other side feeling relaxed and refreshed. Those who would rather avoid walking can hop on the Sentosa Express from the third level of Vivo City, a shopping mall. There are also a number of buses that go to the island daily. A more adventurous way of getting across is by taking the Singapore Cable Car.
Singapore is a very popular destination and finding good accommodation here will not be difficult. Those visiting the country should consider a Singapore serviced apartment which is an ideal alternative to a hotel. Tourists planning on staying a while can find special Singapore long stay apartments. The Heritage Singapore is one place that offers long term accommodation. Surrounded by beautifully landscaped tropical gardens, the accommodations are isolated in a cocoon of tranquillity, but are only a mere 10 minutes from the bustling city.
