Yong Star Cape is part of the 119 km coastline of the Trang Province in Southern Thailand. It projects into the Andaman Sea and is on the south western side of the province. This is the place to come to enjoy a few hours of solitude and to get away from the noise and distractions of Trang’s busier areas.
Yong Star Cape was once part of a bustling trading post with goods being sent and received from places such as Singapore, Penang and other coastal cities in the Malay Peninsula. Prosperity brought diversity in population as many traders and fisher folk of Malay and Chinese origin settled in the area. However when roads were built and land transport developed in Trang, Yon Star lost its importance and the population shrank to a minimum until only a few rubber tappers and fishermen were left. However the natural beauty of the area has not diminished. In fact it can be said that it has improved as life is slow and relaxed and no mega projects disturb the natural order of things.
Due to three sides being adjacent to the sea, the cape’s rocky coast and narrow beach are prone to sea erosion by tidal and wind action. Attempts have been made to reclaim the beach here by planting trees. On clear days views across the calm bay of the hilly surrounding coastline and islands can be quite beautiful. Other than a few private homes there are only minimal facilities for visitors. A few beach huts under the trees above the waterline serve as restaurants. Apparently there is only one place to stay and even that does not go beyond basic facilities. One of the biggest advantages though is that there are no tourists here even in high season. Visitors to this remote outpost can take it easy before continuing with their journey. Hang out on the pier and watch fishermen bringing in their catch and towards late evening catch views of orange and red tinted tropical sunsets. Yong Star can be reached from Palian off the Satung – Trang Highway. Sign boards point the way from Palian.
