With the beautiful Bentota Lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other, Bentota is the start of a long line of beautiful beaches that hug the coast of Sri Lanka. The Golden Mile beach in Bentota is unique for being a strip of land that lies nestled between the Indian Ocean and the lagoon. This beach’s safe zone makes it a favourite among family vacationers because the kids can swim about and the weather is perfect during November to April.
Because of both the sea and lagoon, there are plenty of water sports activities in this area. From jet skiing to water skiing, wind surfing to rowing, sailing to canoeing you can have a great time in and out of the water. As Sri Lanka is a fairly small island, which recently saw the construction of an impressive Southern highway, getting from one area in the southern coast to another is fast and convenient. The highway extends all the way to the town of Hambantota.
Therefore, staying at Bentota doesn’t mean you spend your entire vacation there. After you’ve caught a bit of whale watching in this area, you can drive to Mirissa. The latter is known to be one of the most dependable sites for whale watching. As the sea is generally calm between the period of December to April, you can definitely bump into Blue whales and Sperm whales. It is believed that Mirissa is one of the beaches they cross when migrating from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Seas.
That being said, Mirissa is only becoming popular as a tourist destination as of recent times. As a result, there aren’t many accommodation options as compared to the rest of the beaches of Sri Lanka. In contrast, the resorts in Bentota are numerous.
Since this coastal town of Sri Lanka has long established itself as one of Sri Lanka’s primary tourist hotspots, every Bentota hotel has also established a name for itself in terms of hospitality offerings and service. The Avani Bentota Resort is one such hotel that has been the recipient of the prestigious best luxury resort award.
