The largest of Trang Province’s islands, Koh Libong is home to a Muslim community who earn their livelihood from fishing and tapping rubber. While fishing grounds are on the eastern part of the island, the rubber plantations are found in the central part and the northern portion of the island is heavily forested. The island also offers some limestone karst cliffs and headlands among which is a limestone cave by the shore. Like other picturesque Thai Islands most beaches on the island are beautiful with large swathes of pinkish sand and best of all with no one around. Thriving reefs close by offer interesting snorkeling experiences. However some beaches are rocky and not suitable for swimming. As tourism is being sensitively developed on the island not many hotels are found on shore. Its laid back atmosphere is good to have a typical Thai rural experience as well as to enjoy the islands flora and fauna by trekking along the many trails found in the interior. Koh Libong can be easily accessed in 15 minutes by long tail boats that leave on scheduled trips from Hat Yao during daylight hours.
The attractions of Koh Libong are the large protected mangrove forest on its eastern coast and the sea grass beds in the coastal channels that are one of the last refuges of the dugong. About 40 of these rare creatures graze on the sea grasses off the eastern coast. Dugong spotting sea kayak expeditions is one way to sight these shy animals in the wild although as with all things living in the wild, sightings are not guaranteed. Sometimes the dugongs can be seen in shallow water when the tide comes in but retreat into deeper water when not feeding. The island is also one of the main wader and shore bird watching sites as it is surrounded by tidal mudflats. Almost a hundred species of these birds as well as endemic Thai birds make the island their home for a short while particularly during the months of November and December. Among them are crab plovers, bar tailed godwit, Eurasian curlew, Malaysian plover, Asian dowitcher, frigate birds, gulls, terns, Brahminy kites, mynahs, yellow vented bulbuls, kingfisher to name a few.
